The work
What mosquito control actually involves
Standing water first, treatment second
Mosquito control is mostly water management. They breed in still water and need very little of it: a saucer under a plant pot, a blocked gutter, a tarpaulin fold, a bird bath, a tyre. Removing those sources does more than anything sprayed.
Beyond that, treatments fall into larvicides applied to water that cannot be drained, and barrier sprays applied to the vegetation where adults rest during the day.
Barrier treatments last a few weeks and are washed off by heavy rain, which is why they are sold as a season-long programme of repeat visits rather than as a single application.
What spraying costs
Barrier sprays are not selective about which insects they kill
The products used on vegetation are broad-spectrum insecticides, and they affect the pollinators and predatory insects in the garden along with the mosquitoes.
If that matters to you, it is worth asking about targeted larviciding, which treats the water rather than the plants, and about not spraying flowering plants.
The other honest limit is that adult mosquitoes fly in from elsewhere. Treating your garden does not treat the neighbourhood, and a property next to standing water somebody else owns will keep being reinfested.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
A programme sold before a site survey
“Will the first visit identify breeding sites, and will I get the list?”
A contract of monthly sprays agreed over the phone skips the part that would actually reduce the problem, which is somebody walking the garden and finding the water. Insist the first visit is a survey.
Re-entry times and pets
“What is the re-entry time, and what do I need to do about pets, ponds and vegetables?”
Treated areas have a re-entry interval before children and pets should be back on them, and it varies by product. Ponds with fish and beehives need specific precautions. None of this is complicated and all of it needs saying before the sprayer starts.

Common questions about mosquito control
Who handles mosquito control?
Mosquito control is handled by pest control companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking mosquito control?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is mosquito control priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
