Your starting point for home services
What this page covers and how to use it
Home services cover the trades and companies homeowners hire to keep a property working, safe and comfortable: repairs to core systems like plumbing, heating and electrical, remodeling and construction projects, exterior improvements such as roofing and siding, protection work including pest control and restoration, and routine property care like cleaning, landscaping and moving. TenBestFind researches these businesses city by city and publishes rankings that compare reputation, experience, credentials, services and local presence, so you can start with a short list instead of a map full of pins. Use the category groups below to identify the right kind of professional, then follow through to the local ranking for your market.

How to choose a home service professional
Hiring well has less to do with finding the cheapest quote than with confirming a handful of things before work starts. Requirements differ by trade and by state: an electrician or plumber usually needs a licence, while a handyman or cleaning company often does not, and the dollar threshold at which a contractor licence becomes mandatory varies widely.
Whatever the trade, ask for the same things in writing: scope, materials, timeline, exclusions and warranty terms. For larger projects, confirm who pulls the permit and who is responsible if inspection fails. These questions cost nothing and remove most of the risk in the relationship.
Licensing and credentials
Requirements vary by trade and state. Verify the licence with the issuing agency, not the company website.
Insurance
Look for liability coverage appropriate to the service, plus workers compensation when crews are involved.
Relevant experience
Weigh experience with your exact type of project, not with the trade in general.
Reputation patterns
Look for patterns in customer feedback rather than reacting to any single review.
A written estimate
Understand scope, labour, materials and exclusions before approving anything.
Warranty terms
Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether labour and parts are separate.
Permits and inspections
Confirm who is responsible for pulling permits and booking inspections, and who pays if one fails.
The agreement itself
Get payment schedule, timeline and change-order handling in writing before work starts.
Project planning
Understanding home service costs
Pricing for home services moves with location, labour availability, materials, project complexity, permits, home size, how accessible the work area is, and whether the job is scheduled or urgent. Two identical projects in different markets can land far apart, which is why we describe cost drivers rather than publishing a single national number.
| Service | Main cost drivers |
|---|---|
| Plumbers | Repair type, materials, and access to the pipe or fixture |
| HVAC | System type, the size the home needs, and efficiency rating |
| Electricians | Panel capacity, how far the run is, and whether walls have to be opened |
| Roofing | Roof size and pitch, material, and how much decking has to be replaced |
| Home Remodeling | Room size, fixture and finish level, and how much has to be moved |
| Landscaping | Plot size, grading, planting choice, and irrigation |
Urgent help
When you need a pro quickly
Urgent service availability varies by provider and by market. Some companies staff after-hours crews, others return calls the next morning, and response windows differ between dense metros and rural areas. Confirm availability directly with the company before assuming same-day help.
Our research process
How we evaluate home service businesses
Read our ranking methodology →This is the shared framework. Criteria are then written per category: a chimney company is not evaluated the same way as a moving company or a remodeling contractor, because the decisions consumers face are different.
Reputation
Customer feedback and reputation patterns across sources we can verify.
Experience
Relevant trade experience and time working in the local market.
Credentials
Licensing, insurance and certifications, checked against the issuing body.
Service range
What the company actually takes on, rather than what it lists.
Local presence
Whether the company genuinely works the area it claims to cover.
Responsiveness
How quickly and how consistently a homeowner gets an answer.
Transparency
How clearly pricing, scope and warranty terms are set out up front.

Common questions about home services
How does TenBestFind pick the ten businesses on a list?
We start with every company that genuinely serves the area, then check licensing, years in business, the range of work they take on, and public feedback. The strongest ten go on the page along with the criteria we used. Full detail is on the How We Rank page.
Can a business pay to be ranked?
No. Editorial lists are not for sale. Businesses can buy a sponsored placement, which appears with a Sponsored label and sits outside the ranked list. Nobody at a sponsoring company sees a ranking before it publishes.
How often do you update a ranking?
Each list is re-checked on a schedule, and sooner if something significant changes, like a licence lapsing or a company closing. The date on every page is the last time an editor actually reviewed it, not the day the page was created.
What if my city is not covered yet?
We add cities every month, working outward from the largest metros. If your city is not live, the state or province page will show the nearest covered areas, and you can tell us where to look next through the contact form.
Something on a list is wrong. How do I report it?
Send us the page and what is out of date through the corrections form. We check reports against primary sources such as licence registries, and we note the change on the page when we make it.
I own a business. How do I get considered?
Submit your business and we will add it to the research pool for your city and trade. Submitting does not buy a place on a list, but it does make sure we have your licensing, service area and coverage right when we next review that category.
