Our top 9 hvac companies in Boston

Boston's housing stock sets the terms for HVAC work here more than almost anywhere else in the country. Triple deckers, brownstones and prewar condos in Dorchester, Roslindale, Back Bay and Brighton were mostly built before central air existed, so a huge share of the work in this city is retrofit: squeezing ductless mini splits into homes with no duct chases, converting steam and hot water radiators, or coaxing another decade out of a boiler that has outlived three owners. Winters bring genuine cold snaps and nor'easters that can take out heat for days, and summers have gotten hot and humid enough that AC has gone from a luxury to something most buyers expect. That combination means a Boston HVAC company needs real experience with old plumbing chases and knob and tube wiring, not just a truck full of parts for new construction. Massachusetts also regulates this trade closely. Plumbing, gas fitting and refrigeration work generally requires a state license, and companies that also touch gas lines need a Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters license in addition to any HVAC or sheet metal credential. Before hiring anyone on this list, or any HVAC company in Boston, look up the license number the company gives you on the state's public license lookup, and confirm it is current and matches the company name on your quote. A number of companies below did not publish a license number on their own website, which is noted plainly in each profile so you know to ask.

How we chose the best hvac companies in Boston

Read our full ranking methodology →

This list starts from two Google Maps searches, "HVAC contractor in Boston, MA" and "HVAC company Boston," merged in Google's own result order and checked against three additional neighborhood searches to fill out the list, since Boston's results are unusually crowded with companies actually based in Brookline, Cambridge, Quincy and other neighboring towns that do not count as Boston itself. Every finalist needed an OPERATIONAL Google Business listing, a rating of 4.5 stars or higher, at least 50 Google reviews, and a working, real company website, not a template or lead generation page. A handful of Boston-named listings with one or two reviews, or a website built on an obvious spam pattern, were excluded outright. One finalist, Horvitz Plumbing & Heating, was already a published Boston plumbing listing on this site; rather than duplicate it, its existing profile was extended to cover HVAC and it appears here at its real Google Maps position. Despite additional neighborhood searches, only nine companies in Boston proper cleared every bar, one short of a full ten; that shortfall is disclosed here rather than padded with a weaker listing. Every company's rating, review count and address were checked against Google on September 20, 2026, and no company paid for placement or review on this list.

How to choose a hvac company in Boston

  • Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  • Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  • Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  • Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  • Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  • Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  • Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  • Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Are you insured, and can you send the certificate?
  • How long have you worked in this area?
  • Will you provide a written estimate with materials listed?
  • What warranty do you offer on the work itself?
  • Do you use subcontractors for this job?
  • Who handles permits and inspection?
  • What would you recommend here, and why?
  • How are unexpected costs handled once work starts?
  • What is the estimated timeline from start to finish?
  • Can you provide recent local references?

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

HVAC companies in Boston FAQs

  • How do I check if a Boston HVAC company is actually licensed?

Massachusetts publishes a public license lookup through the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters for plumbing and gas work, and a separate construction supervisor license database for general contracting. Ask the company for their exact license number and search it yourself before booking, especially for any job touching gas lines or requiring a permit.

  • How much does HVAC repair or installation cost in Boston?

A standard AC or furnace repair visit typically runs a few hundred dollars once a diagnostic fee and parts are included. A full system replacement, ductless mini split installation, or boiler conversion in an older triple decker runs considerably more, often into five figures once electrical or ductwork upgrades are factored in. Get at least two written quotes before committing to a major job.

  • Why do so many Boston HVAC companies specialize in ductless mini splits?

Most of Boston's housing stock, from Dorchester triple deckers to Back Bay brownstones, was built before central air existed and has no duct chases to retrofit one in affordably. Ductless mini split heat pumps solve that by running only a small line set through walls, which is why so many companies on this list lead with that specialty over traditional central air.
