The work
What water damage restoration actually involves
Stop it, extract it, dry it, and prove it is dry
Water damage work runs in a fixed order: stop the source, extract standing water, remove materials that cannot be saved, then dry the structure with air movers and dehumidifiers until moisture readings return to normal.
The drying is the part that takes days and the part people want to shorten. Structural drying is measured rather than judged, and the readings are what say when it is finished.
Water is categorised by how contaminated it is, from clean supply water through to sewage, and the category decides what can be dried and kept and what has to be removed. It escalates with time, so clean water left for days stops being clean water.
Insurance
Document before anybody starts, because the claim is built on it
Mitigation has to happen fast, and the documentation has to happen faster, because once the wet carpet is in a skip it cannot be photographed.
Photograph and video everything before removal, keep a list of what was taken out, and keep the daily moisture logs the restoration firm produces. Those logs are what justify the number of days of equipment on the invoice.
Your policy also requires you to mitigate promptly. Waiting for an adjuster before stopping the damage can itself reduce what is paid.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Equipment billed by the day without readings
“Will I get daily moisture readings for every affected area?”
Air movers and dehumidifiers are charged per unit per day, and it is the largest line on most water damage invoices. Without daily moisture readings there is nothing showing how many days were necessary, which is exactly what an adjuster will query.
Drying around what should come out
“What is being removed rather than dried, and how was that decided?”
Wet insulation inside a wall and saturated chipboard do not dry usefully in place. Drying the surfaces while leaving them produces a room that reads dry and smells wrong two months later.

Common questions about water damage restoration
Who handles water damage restoration?
Water damage restoration is handled by restoration companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking water damage restoration?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is water damage restoration priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
