Our top 10 hvac companies in Columbus

Columbus sees the full swing of a continental climate, humid summers that push central air conditioners hard for months at a stretch and cold winters that put real demand on furnaces and heat pumps, so a system's condition matters here in both directions rather than just one season. A lot of Columbus's housing stock, especially in older neighborhoods near downtown and in first-ring suburbs like Clintonville, Bexley and Grandview, still runs original ductwork and aging equipment that a straightforward tune-up can't always fix. Before hiring any HVAC contractor in Ohio, confirm the company's HVAC contractor license is active through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, which any homeowner can check directly rather than taking a company's own claim at face value.

How we chose the best hvac companies in Columbus

Read our full ranking methodology →

This list follows the order these companies appear in Google Maps search results for HVAC contractors in Columbus, Ohio, filtered down to companies with a Google rating of at least 4.5 stars, at least 50 reviews, a real working website, and a physical address inside Columbus rather than a separate incorporated suburb. We cross-checked each company's name, address and phone number between Google and its own website, and where the two differed we used Google's information and noted the discrepancy. Checked September 22, 2026. No company paid for inclusion or placement on this list.

How to choose a hvac company in Columbus

  • Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  • Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  • Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  • Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  • Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  • Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  • Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  • Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Are you insured, and can you send the certificate?
  • How long have you worked in this area?
  • Will you provide a written estimate with materials listed?
  • What warranty do you offer on the work itself?
  • Do you use subcontractors for this job?
  • Who handles permits and inspection?
  • What would you recommend here, and why?
  • How are unexpected costs handled once work starts?
  • What is the estimated timeline from start to finish?
  • Can you provide recent local references?

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

HVAC companies in Columbus FAQs

  • How do I check an Ohio HVAC contractor's license?

Search the contractor's name or license number on the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board site. Confirm the license is active and matches the company name you're hiring, not a related entity.

  • What does HVAC service typically cost in Columbus?

Pricing depends on job scope and whether a company charges flat-rate or offers a free estimate, and several companies on this list offer 0% financing for 60 months on qualifying system replacements, so ask about current promotions before booking.

  • Why do Columbus homes need both strong heating and cooling?

Columbus sits in a continental climate with cold winters and humid summers, so furnaces and air conditioners both see heavy seasonal use, and older housing stock near downtown often still runs original ductwork that limits efficiency.
