Editorial Standards

Avenue Lock & Security works out of a blue-trimmed storefront at 738 Bank Street in the Glebe, the same shop where it has cut keys and fitted locks since 1969. It serves homes, businesses and institutions across Ottawa, and the front of the store shows the work: a wall of key blanks, a row of cutting machines and lock hardware in the windows. The site lists locksmith services such as rekeying, master keying, deadbolts and emergency lockouts, plus alarms, CCTV and card access through its electronics division. It is also a certified Medeco dealer, which matters if you want high-security cylinders rather than off-the-shelf hardware. Google shows 4.5 stars from 97 reviews, read October 28, 2026. Reviewers praise Rob for rekeying and for tracking down key codes other shops turned away, and Mohind for a fast lockout call. Walk-in hours are weekdays and Saturday morning to afternoon, with 24/7 emergency response stated on the website.

  • Best for rekeying, hard-to-match keys and medeco high-security locks
  • Operating from the same Bank Street storefront in the Glebe since 1969
  • A recent one-star review says copied keys failed and one jammed a lock, so test copies at the counter

Our Take on Avenue Lock & Security

A real Glebe shop with more than five decades behind it, strongest on rekeying, old or odd keys and Medeco hardware. The one recent one-star review about faulty key copies is worth bearing in mind, so test any copies before you leave the counter.

I AM VERY VERY disappointed. I wanted two copies of my house key and the first two he gave me didn’t work at all so I had to go back and he offered to fix the two I had and also print another two copies and when I got home to try the new four keys only and one worked and I wish it didn’t. because when I tried it and I took it out and used my original key it got stuck I don’t know what the key he gave me did but it ruined the heart of the lock and I had to call the safety service of my building to come and change the whole lock. I wasted my time I paid 27 Dollars for the first two copies and 45 dollars for Uber going to them two times and going back home two times and now I am paying 250 for a lock change and above that I had to call my work to cancel my shift for 1 pm just 30 minutes before it’s starts since I cant leave my home until someone come and change the lock. This is a terrible, horrible and an awful experience.

Rob went out of his way to re-key the lock for my tool cabinet. I lost the keys and they didn't make that key code anymore. I called a few other locksmith's before Ave. lock and Security that were closer to me that said they couldn't help as the key code was out of date. Rob lent me his tools to get the lock cylinder out of the cabinet and bring it to him. With the cylinder, he figured out how to make a new key. I don't know if another locksmith would have been as knowledgeable and nice to do that.

Had been locked outside my room today. Thought it was the end of the world... I called 3 other locksmiths.. said they would do it for 200-250.... Then called Avenue Lock and Security and as soon as they answered the phone I KNEW I was dealing with professionals. I said "locked out"..... they said it didn't exist in their vocabulary! I said how soon can you come? Before I even thought of the question, I heard a knock outside my door. It was the fastest toughest chillest dude I've ever met, Mohind. He started working on the lock like he was trying to beat a record! I watched in awe as he unlocked my door with such precision, carefulness, and efficiency. Then he had one last pin to go and it put up a fight. But in the end it was no match for Mohind. He unlocked my door and I paid him he said "keep the change" and rode off into the sunset on his stallion, off to help more people. In all seriousness I could not be any happier, these guys acted with such professionalism and kindness, I only have good things to say about their staff and system. Their rates are very fairly priced, and they get the job done fast.

Rob was incredibly helpful and is an extremely knowledgeable locksmith. He went out of his way to come help us re-key our new home and install better hardware for the doors. It was done well, quickly, and looks great. I’d highly, highly recommend checking them out for anything locksmith related, you won’t be disappointed.

Company Background

About Avenue Lock & Security

Avenue Lock & Security sits in a blue storefront at 738 Bank Street in the Glebe, and the shop has been cutting keys and fitting locks in Ottawa since 1969. Inside you can see why people walk in with odd jobs: a wall of key blanks, rows of cutting machines and shelves of cylinders. The website describes a family-owned business with three divisions, locksmithing, electronics (burglar alarms, CCTV and card access) and detection and monitoring, and it offers residential and commercial work around the city, from Centretown and Old Ottawa South to Nepean, Kanata, Orleans and Gloucester.

On the locksmith side, the site lists rekeying, master keying, deadbolts, four-way locks, window bars, in-shop key cutting and emergency lockouts. Avenue Lock & Security is a certified Medeco dealer with walk-in service and same-day on-site installation, which suits landlords, property managers and homeowners who want controlled keys. The site does not list Schlage, Kwikset, Yale or smart-lock work, so ask if you need those.

Reviews give the clearest picture. Ryan says Rob re-keyed a new home and upgraded the door hardware quickly. Kris had lost the keys to a tool cabinet and been turned away by other shops because the key code was obsolete; Rob took the cylinder and worked out a new key. Samuel sourced an old mortise lock here for a 100-year-old door. A reviewer who was locked out says Mohind arrived within minutes and the price was fair. The honest negative is a one-star review from this month, where a customer says duplicated keys did not work and one jammed the lock, forcing a lock change by the building. It is one case among 97 ratings, but check copies before you leave. Google shows 4.5 from 97 Google reviews, read 2026-10-28.

Avenue Lock & Security suits people who like dealing with a physical shop and an established name, and anyone with an older or unusual lock. It suits less well people who want a long list of smart-lock brands. Walk-in hours on Google are Monday to Friday 8:00 to 4:30 and Saturday 8:00 to 4:00; the website states 24/7 emergency service, so confirm after-hours availability by phone. Ontario does not license locksmiths provincially, so ask for the registered business name, proof of insurance, a firm price on the phone and photo ID at the door. Also ask whether a lockout will be non-destructive and what warranty covers parts and labour.

Avenue Lock & Security FAQs

  • Is Avenue Lock & Security licensed or insured in Ottawa?

The company's website does not state a licence or insurance policy. Ontario does not license locksmiths provincially, so ask for the registered business name, proof of insurance, a firm price on the phone and photo ID at the door. The site does say it is a certified Medeco dealer and that its technicians are vetted and trained, and it has operated from 738 Bank Street since 1969.

  • What are Avenue Lock & Security's hours, and do they do emergency lockouts?

The shop on Bank Street is open Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and closed Sunday, according to Google. Warranty terms are not on file. Ask for them in writing before work starts.

  • How was this profile built?

Credentials come from issuing authorities, ratings from the company's Google Business Profile with the date we read them, and the editorial take from our own review of estimates, warranty documents and public feedback. Anything the business told us is labelled as reported.

  • Can a business pay to improve its profile?

A business can subscribe to manage its own listing details, and it can buy a labelled sponsored placement. Neither changes a ranking position or the editorial assessment on this page.
