The work
What ev charger installation actually involves
The charger is simple, the supply to it is the job
A home charger is a dedicated high-current circuit, a protective device and a unit on the wall. Fitting the unit takes an hour. Everything that decides the price is between the panel and that wall: distance, route, whether the walls or the driveway have to open, and whether the panel can carry it.
That last part is where these jobs turn into panel work. A house already close to its service capacity may need a load management device that throttles the charger when the rest of the house is busy, which is usually much cheaper than upgrading the service.
Most people charge overnight and need far less power than they assume. A slower circuit that adds plenty of range in eight hours can avoid a service upgrade entirely, and is worth pricing alongside the fastest option.
Before you upgrade the service
Load management is usually cheaper than more amps
The reflex when the panel is full is to upgrade the service. For vehicle charging specifically, there is normally a cheaper answer.
A load management device watches the whole-house demand and reduces or pauses the charger when everything else is running. The car takes slightly longer overnight and the service never has to change.
It is explicitly permitted for this purpose in current codes, and it can turn a job that needed the utility involved into an afternoon's work. Ask for it to be priced as an alternative.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Permit and rebate paperwork
“Is a permit included, and does this installation qualify for the rebates available here?”
These installations are permit work nearly everywhere, and many utilities and jurisdictions offer rebates that require the permit, a licensed installer and sometimes a specific charger model. Skipping the permit can cost more in lost rebate than it saved.
Hardwired or plug, decided by default
“Is this hardwired or on a receptacle, and why that one here?”
A charger on a plug is easier to replace and to take with you; a hardwired one is required for some outdoor locations and higher currents, and in some places the plug version needs additional protection that adds cost. It is a real choice and it is usually made for you.

Common questions about ev charger installation
Who handles ev charger installation?
EV charger installation is handled by electricians. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking ev charger installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is ev charger installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
