The work

What generator installation actually involves

Standby or portable, and the switch that keeps the power company safe

A standby generator is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself when the power fails. A portable is wheeled out, fuelled by hand and connected through an inlet. The standby costs several times as much and asks nothing of you during an outage.

Either way the critical component is the transfer switch. It disconnects the house from the grid before connecting the generator, which stops your generator pushing power back into the lines where somebody is working.

Standby

Permanently installed, starts itself

  • Automatic on outageYes
  • RefuellingNone
  • Permit and gas workYes
  • CostMuch higher

Portable with an inlet

Wheeled out and connected

  • Automatic on outageNo
  • RefuellingBy hand
  • Permit and gas workInlet only
  • CostMuch lower

Sizing does not have to mean the whole house. A generator feeding a critical loads panel, heating, refrigeration, a few circuits and the well pump, is far cheaper than one carrying air conditioning as well, and covers what an outage actually threatens.

Backfeeding

Never connect a generator through a socket

Running a lead from a generator into a wall socket to feed the house is the one thing in this trade that is genuinely, immediately dangerous, and it is common enough to be worth saying plainly.

It energises the house wiring and, through the meter, the utility lines outside, where linemen are working on what they have every right to believe is a dead circuit.

A proper transfer switch or interlock makes that physically impossible, which is why they are required. It is not paperwork; it is the part that stops the generator killing somebody.

Failure points

Two things that go wrong

All electricians research →
  1. The gas supply was not sized for it

Ask: “Has the gas load been recalculated with the generator on it, and does the meter need upgrading?”

A standby generator is a large gas appliance, and the existing meter and pipe were sized before it existed. Undersized supply shows up as the generator stumbling under load, usually when the furnace fires at the same time, which is exactly when you need it.

  2. Nobody exercises it

Ask: “What is the maintenance schedule, and is a service plan available?”

A standby unit runs a self-test weekly and still needs oil changes, filters and a load test on a schedule, like any engine. The ones that fail during an outage are almost always the ones that have not run under load in years.

Before you book generator installation

How we rank →

Six checks, in the order they save you the most. None of them takes longer than a phone call, and the first one is the reason two quotes for the same job can be a thousand apart.

  1. In-house or subcontracted

Ask whether the crew doing this specific work is on their payroll. Plenty of companies list a service and hand it straight to somebody else, which is not wrong, but it changes who is answerable when something goes back.

  2. The licence for the parent trade

Look the number up with the authority that issues it rather than reading the certificate they send you. What a licence covers, and whether one is needed at all, changes by state and province.

  3. Insurance, confirmed with the insurer

A current certificate sent to you by the insurer, not a photocopy from the company. Ask for liability and, where crews are on site, workers' compensation.

  4. What the quote leaves out

Removal, disposal, subfloor or substrate work, permits and making good afterwards are where two quotes on the same job separate. Ask for the exclusions in writing next to the inclusions.

  5. Two warranties, not one

The manufacturer covers the material and the company covers the workmanship. Get the second in writing, with its length, and ask whether it transfers if you sell.

  6. How a change is priced

Agree before the deposit how anything found on the way is priced and approved. The moment to settle that is while you are still choosing between companies, not on the day somebody lifts a floorboard.

Common questions about generator installation

Ask us something else →

  • Who handles generator installation?

Generator installation is handled by electricians. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.

  • What should I ask before booking generator installation?

Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.

  • How do I compare quotes for this?

Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.

  • Is generator installation priced separately from the rest of the job?

Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
