The work
What rewiring actually involves
Why old wiring gets replaced, and how the house gets opened
Rewiring is usually driven by one of a few things: cloth-insulated wiring that has gone brittle, aluminium branch circuits, knob and tube, or simply too few circuits and no ground. The wire itself is a modest cost; getting at it is not.
How much has to open depends on the construction. Some runs can be fished through cavities from above and below, which is why attics and basements matter. Where the route is blocked, the wall comes open.
Knob and tube and aluminium branch wiring are both insurable problems in many places, not only safety ones. It is worth asking your insurer what they require before you decide how much of the house to do.
Doing it in stages
A partial rewire is reasonable, as long as you know where it stops
Rewiring the whole house at once is disruptive and expensive, and doing it in phases is a legitimate way to manage that. The risk is losing track of what is old.
Phasing by circuit rather than by room is usually the sensible split: the kitchen, the bathrooms and anything outdoors first, because that is where old wiring and water meet.
Whatever the order, insist on a written record of what has been replaced and what has not, marked at the panel. The next owner, the next electrician and your insurer will all want it.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Making good, again
“Who closes and finishes the walls, and is that inside this price?”
As with repiping, most electrical quotes cover the electrical work and stop at the hole. Plaster, drywall, cornice and paint in an older house can be a significant second trade, and in a period property the plasterwork may be the harder job of the two.
Old fittings on new circuits
“Are the outlets, switches and fittings being replaced as part of this?”
A rewire is the natural moment to replace switches, outlets and any fitting that is original to the old wiring. Keeping them saves a little and puts worn accessories on new cable, which tends to be the thing that fails next.

Common questions about rewiring
Who handles rewiring?
Rewiring is handled by electricians. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking rewiring?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is rewiring priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
