The work
What lighting installation actually involves
Fittings, controls, and whether the dimmer will get on with the lamps
Most lighting work is straightforward: replacing fittings, adding recessed lights, putting in under-cabinet or outdoor lighting. The complications are usually in the ceiling rather than the fitting, particularly where there is insulation, a fire-rated ceiling or a joist exactly where the light should go.
The other complication is dimming. Low-energy lamps and older dimmers are frequently incompatible, which shows up as flicker, buzz, a narrow dimming range or lamps that will not go low without dropping out.
Colour temperature is worth deciding deliberately across a whole room rather than fitting by fitting. Mixing warm and neutral lamps in one space is the most common reason new lighting looks wrong in a way people struggle to name.
Recessed lights
A downlight is a hole in your ceiling, and the ceiling may have a job
Cutting recessed fittings into a ceiling is easy. Whether that ceiling is doing something else is the question worth asking first.
Where the ceiling is part of a fire separation, between a garage and a room above, or between flats, the fittings have to maintain that rating, and the correct products cost more than standard ones.
Insulation matters too. A fitting not rated for contact with insulation needs clearance around it, and pulling the insulation back from a dozen holes measurably affects the thermal performance of the ceiling.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Dimmer and lamp not matched
“Have you checked the dimmer against the lamps on the manufacturer's compatibility list?”
The commonest complaint after a lighting job is flicker or buzz, and it is almost always a compatibility problem between the dimmer and the driver in the lamp. Manufacturers publish compatibility lists. Choosing both from one list beforehand avoids the whole conversation.
Integrated fittings that cannot be relamped
“Are these relampable, or does the whole fitting get replaced when it fails?”
Many modern fittings have the light source built in, so when it fails the whole fitting is replaced rather than the lamp. That is fine if you know it, and it is a poor surprise in eight years across twenty downlights in a plastered ceiling.

Common questions about lighting installation
Who handles lighting installation?
Lighting installation is handled by electricians. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking lighting installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is lighting installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
