The work
What door installation actually involves
Insulation, material and the tracks that decide what fits
A new door is chosen on material, steel, timber or composite, on insulation, expressed as an R-value, and on how it looks. If the garage is attached to the house, shares a wall with a room, or is used for anything other than parking, the insulation is the specification that matters most.
The other constraint is the space above and beside the opening, which decides what track configuration is possible. Low headroom situations need particular hardware.
An insulated door with a poorly sealed perimeter performs badly regardless of its rating. The seals at the sides, the top and along the floor do a large share of the work, and they are the part that wears.
Attached garages
The door between the garage and the house is the one with rules
People replacing a garage door often do not realise that the internal door from the garage into the house is a fire separation with requirements of its own.
It typically has to be fire rated and self-closing, and the wall and ceiling between the garage and the living space have their own rating.
It comes up because a garage door replacement is often when somebody first looks closely at the garage, and because it is a genuine safety item rather than a formality.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Disposal of the old door
“Is removing and disposing of the old door included?”
Removing and disposing of the existing door and hardware is real work and it appears in some quotes and not others. It is a simple thing to compare and a common reason two prices differ by more than they seem to.
Reusing the existing opener
“Is the existing opener suitable for the weight of this new door?”
Keeping the old opener with a new door can be fine, and it can also mean an opener sized for a lighter door, or one too old for the safety requirements. Worth a decision rather than an assumption.

Common questions about door installation
Who handles door installation?
Door installation is handled by garage door companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking door installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is door installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
