The work
What local moving actually involves
Priced by the hour, so the estimate is about time
Local moves are normally charged hourly for a crew and a truck, sometimes with a minimum and travel time either end. That means the estimate is really a prediction of how long your move will take, and the things that change it are access, stairs, distance from door to truck, and how well packed you are.
Being genuinely ready when the crew arrives is the largest single lever on the final bill, and it is entirely in your control.
Ask whether travel time is charged, and from where. Some firms bill from their depot to your door and back again, which can add an hour to a short move before anything is lifted.
Valuation
The cover included is not insurance, and it is very low
Movers include a basic liability that is typically calculated by weight rather than by value, which comes to a small fraction of what anything is worth.
Under that basic cover, a damaged item is settled on its weight. A heavy, cheap item and a light, valuable one are treated identically, and the valuable one is badly served.
Full value protection is available at extra cost, and household insurance sometimes covers goods in transit. Either is worth arranging in advance for anything you would actually mind losing.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
An estimate given without seeing the place
“Will you do a walkthrough, in person or on video, before confirming the estimate?”
A quote over the phone without a walkthrough, in person or by video, is a guess against an assumed inventory. It is also the usual precondition for the bill being much larger than the estimate, because nobody saw the stairs or the amount of stuff.
What the crew will not take
“What will you not take, so I can deal with it beforehand?”
Movers will not carry flammables, gas bottles, some chemicals and often paint, and many decline plants and anything perishable. Discovering the list on the day leaves you with a car full of things and no plan.

Common questions about local moving
Who handles local moving?
Local moving is handled by moving companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking local moving?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is local moving priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
