The work
What long distance moving actually involves
Priced by weight and distance, and the truck may not be yours alone
Long distance moves are usually priced on the weight of the shipment and the distance, rather than hourly. Many are consolidated, meaning your goods share a trailer with other shipments, which is why delivery is quoted as a window of days rather than a date.
The alternatives are a dedicated truck, which costs considerably more and delivers on a date, and container services where you load a box that is then transported.
Ask for the delivery spread in writing, and plan for the far end of it. People book a flight to arrive for the early end of the window and then pay for a hotel and an air bed for a week.
Binding estimates
The word binding is the one that matters on the paperwork
Long distance estimates come in kinds, and the difference decides whether the number you were given is the number you pay.
A non-binding estimate can rise if the shipment weighs more than predicted. A binding estimate is fixed for the inventory listed. A binding not-to-exceed estimate can fall if it weighs less but cannot rise, which is the best of the three for a customer.
Whichever it is will be written on the document. It is worth reading that word before signing, and worth asking for the third kind.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
A large deposit up front
“What deposit is required, and when is the balance due?”
Reputable long-distance movers ask for a modest deposit or none at all, and take payment at delivery. A demand for a large cash deposit before anything moves is the most reliable signal in the whole trade that something is wrong.
Goods held against a higher price
“What is your registration number, so I can check it with the authority?”
The serious version of a rogue move is a shipment that arrives with a demand for far more than was agreed before it will be unloaded. Checking the mover's registration and complaint history with the relevant transport authority before booking is the defence, and it takes minutes.

Common questions about long distance moving
Who handles long distance moving?
Long distance moving is handled by moving companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking long distance moving?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is long distance moving priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
