Our top 10 hvac companies in Montreal

Montreal's humid continental climate means winters cold enough for a reliable furnace or heat pump to matter and summers humid enough that central air conditioning has gone from a luxury to a near-necessity in much of the city's older housing stock. A large share of Montreal homes still run older oil or electric baseboard heating, which is why heat pump conversions and geothermal installs dominate the review history of nearly every company on this list, often with government rebate programs like Hydro-Québec's incentives and the Logisvert program helping offset the cost. Quebec HVAC contractors need a license from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, known as an RBQ license, which every reputable company on this list either states directly on its site or should be able to produce on request. Before signing anything, ask to see the current RBQ license number and confirm it matches the company doing the work, since some larger companies subcontract to RBQ-licensed entrepreneurs rather than working under one company-wide number.

How we chose the best hvac companies in Montreal

Read our full ranking methodology →

Every company was found through two rounds of Google Maps searches for HVAC contractors in Montreal, one in English and one in French, then checked one by one: current operating status, a Google rating of at least 4.5 with at least 50 reviews, a real working website matching the Google listing, and a physical or service base inside the City of Montreal or one of its boroughs rather than a separate demerged municipality like Mount Royal or Côte-Saint-Luc. Several strong candidates were excluded for being based in those separate towns, and a few high-review listings that led only to directory or lead-gen pages rather than the company's own site were also left off. Ratings and review counts were checked September 23, 2026. No company paid for placement or review on this list.

How to choose a hvac company in Montreal

  • Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  • Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  • Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  • Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  • Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  • Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  • Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  • Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Are you insured, and can you send the certificate?
  • How long have you worked in this area?
  • Will you provide a written estimate with materials listed?
  • What warranty do you offer on the work itself?
  • Do you use subcontractors for this job?
  • Who handles permits and inspection?
  • What would you recommend here, and why?
  • How are unexpected costs handled once work starts?
  • What is the estimated timeline from start to finish?
  • Can you provide recent local references?

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

HVAC companies in Montreal FAQs

  • How do I check an HVAC contractor's RBQ license in Quebec?

Every HVAC contractor doing installation work in Quebec needs a license from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, known as an RBQ license. Ask any company on this list to provide its current number and verify it against the RBQ's public registry before signing a contract, especially for larger companies that may subcontract to RBQ-licensed entrepreneurs rather than working under one company-wide number.

  • How much does heat pump maintenance cost in Montreal?

A few companies on this list publish maintenance plan pricing, starting around $250 plus taxes annually. Most others don't state a flat rate, so ask each company directly for its current plan pricing and confirm what it covers before signing up.

  • Why do so many Montreal HVAC companies focus on heat pump conversions?

A large share of Montreal's housing stock still runs on older oil or electric baseboard heating, and Hydro-Québec and Logisvert rebate programs have made converting to a heat pump the standard upgrade path across Greater Montreal, which is why it dominates the review history of nearly every company on this list.
