The work
What bathroom remodeling actually involves
Waterproofing and ventilation, then everything else
The visible parts of a bathroom, the tiling, the fittings, the vanity, sit on two invisible systems that decide whether the room lasts. The waterproofing behind the tile in the wet area, and the ventilation that removes the moisture from the air.
Get either wrong and the room looks perfect for two years and then does not. Rotten substrate behind a shower is the most expensive common failure in domestic building, and it is entirely preventable.
Extractor fans are frequently undersized and frequently vented into the loft rather than outside. Both are common and both put the moisture somewhere it will do damage instead of removing it.
The shower
Tile is not the waterproof layer
Tile and grout shed water. They do not stop it. The waterproofing is a separate membrane system behind them, and it is a system rather than a product.
The membrane, the corner pieces, the pipe collars and the bonding all have to come from one manufacturer's range and be installed to their instructions, because that is what the warranty covers and what actually seals.
Ask which system is being used and ask for the manufacturer's name. A bathroom fitter who cannot answer that is not doing this part deliberately.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Ventilation that does not reach outside
“Where does the extractor duct terminate, and is it insulated on the way?”
A fan discharging into a roof space moves the moisture out of the bathroom and deposits it in the structure. It is extremely common in older work. The duct should run to an outside terminal, be insulated where it passes through cold space, and have a fall away from the fan.
Floor and substrate taken on trust
“What is going under the floor tile, and has the deflection been checked?”
Tiled bathroom floors need a substrate stiff enough not to flex, and in older houses the existing floor often is not. Tiling over it produces cracked grout within a year. The strengthening is not visible in the finished room and is easy to leave out of a keen price.

Common questions about bathroom remodeling
Who handles bathroom remodeling?
Bathroom remodeling is handled by remodeling contractors. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking bathroom remodeling?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is bathroom remodeling priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
