The work
What dishwasher repair actually involves
Drainage, spray and seals, in that order of likelihood
Most dishwasher complaints are about cleaning performance, and most of those come down to water not getting where it should: a blocked filter, clogged spray arm holes, a failing circulation pump or a drain restriction. None is expensive.
Leaks are the other main category, and they are usually the door seal, the pump seal or a hose connection. Water under the cabinet from a dishwasher is worth acting on quickly because of what it does to the floor and the units around it.
Clean the filter in the base and clear the spray arm holes with a pin before booking a repair for poor cleaning. On a machine that has never had it done, that is the fix more often than not.
Integrated machines
A slow leak does more damage than the repair costs
A dishwasher sits under a worktop surrounded by particle board, and a leak it is small enough to ignore is a leak that is soaking the cabinets next to it.
By the time water appears on the floor it has usually been wetting the base of the units for a while, and swollen chipboard does not recover.
So a dishwasher that is damp underneath is worth looking at now rather than at the weekend, and worth pulling out to check the floor under it while somebody is there.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Repair priced against a cheap machine
“What is the total repair cost, and what would a comparable replacement be?”
Entry-level dishwashers are inexpensive enough that a pump and two hours of labour can approach the price of a new one. On a mid-range or integrated machine the arithmetic is completely different. Ask what the repair costs before deciding anything.
Installation issues blamed on the appliance
“Is the drain hose looped and connected correctly?”
A drain hose without a high loop, or plumbed into a disposal with the plug still in, produces symptoms that look like a broken machine. These are installation faults, and a technician who corrects one has fixed the problem without replacing anything.

Common questions about dishwasher repair
Who handles dishwasher repair?
Dishwasher repair is handled by appliance repair companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking dishwasher repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is dishwasher repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
