The work
What refrigerator repair actually involves
Sealed system or everything else
Refrigerator faults split cleanly. Everything outside the sealed system, the defrost heater and thermostat, fans, door seals, control boards, thermistors, is a normal repair with a normal part. The sealed system, compressor, evaporator and refrigerant, is specialist work, needs certification to open, and costs a large fraction of a new appliance.
The common symptom of a fridge that is cold but not cold enough is usually the defrost system rather than the compressor, and that is the cheap end.
Before booking, pull the appliance out and vacuum the condenser coils at the back or underneath. A coil packed with dust makes a healthy fridge behave like a failing one, and it is the most common fault there is.
Repair or replace
Weigh the repair against the age and the running cost
The usual rule of thumb is that a repair costing more than about half of a replacement is not worth doing, but the age of the appliance matters as much as the ratio.
A sealed system repair on a unit over about eight years old is rarely sensible. Almost anything else on a decent appliance of that age is.
Running cost tilts it further on older units, because efficiency has improved a lot and a refrigerator runs continuously for its whole life. A fifteen-year-old fridge is quietly expensive even when it is working.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Parts availability on a discontinued model
“Is the part available, and what does it cost, before I commit to the repair?”
Control boards and cosmetic parts for models more than a few years old can be unobtainable or absurdly priced, and that is discovered after the diagnostic visit has been paid for. It is worth asking the technician to check availability before ordering anything.
Diagnostic fee terms
“What is the call-out and diagnostic fee, and is it credited if I proceed?”
Nearly every appliance firm charges to attend and diagnose, and they differ on whether it comes off the repair. On a repair you may well decline, that fee is the real cost of finding out, so it is worth knowing the number before the van is dispatched.

Common questions about refrigerator repair
Who handles refrigerator repair?
Refrigerator repair is handled by appliance repair companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking refrigerator repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is refrigerator repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
