The work
What washer and dryer repair actually involves
Bearings, pumps, belts, and the vent nobody thinks about
Washing machine faults are mostly mechanical and mostly repairable: drain pumps blocked by debris, door seals, shock absorbers and suspension, and on front loaders the drum bearings. Bearings are the expensive one because on many machines the outer drum is sealed, so the repair means a whole drum assembly.
Dryer faults are simpler still, and a large share of them are not faults at all but restricted venting, which makes a working dryer take three cycles to do one load.
If a dryer has got slower over a year or two, clean the whole vent run to the outside before calling anybody. Restricted venting is the single most common dryer complaint and it is also a fire risk.
Front loaders
A drum bearing is where the repair-or-replace line usually falls
Most washing machine repairs are worth doing. Bearings are the exception that catches people out.
On machines with a sealed outer drum, replacing bearings means replacing the drum assembly and several hours of labour, which frequently lands close to the price of a new machine.
The warning is audible long before failure: a rumble that rises with the spin speed, getting louder over months. Catching it early does not make the repair cheaper, but it does let you plan rather than react.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
The vent, not the dryer
“Has the vent run been checked and its length and bends assessed?”
A dryer that will not dry is very often a venting problem: a crushed flexible hose behind the machine, a long run with too many bends, or a blocked outside flap. A technician who replaces a heating element without checking the vent has fixed a symptom of something still there.
Stacked and integrated units
“Does the quote account for getting the machine out of where it is?”
Machines built into cabinetry or stacked in a closet can need significant work simply to reach, and that labour is real. It is also frequently absent from a phone quote given against a model number.

Common questions about washer and dryer repair
Who handles washer and dryer repair?
Washer and dryer repair is handled by appliance repair companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking washer and dryer repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is washer and dryer repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
