The work
What tile installation actually involves
Ceramic or porcelain, and the substrate that decides how long it lasts
Both are fired clay. Porcelain is fired denser and absorbs almost no water, which is what lets it go outdoors, into wet rooms and onto floors that take real traffic. Ceramic is softer, cheaper and easier to cut, and on a bathroom wall the difference will never show.
The tile itself is rarely what fails. What fails is underneath it: a substrate that moves, a waterproofing layer that was skipped, or a tile bed with no room to expand.
On a timber floor, or anywhere the structure moves, an uncoupling membrane between the substrate and the tile lets the two move independently. It is the single most effective thing standing between a tiled floor and a line of cracked grout.
Where it fails
Almost every tile failure is a substrate failure
Cracked tiles, hollow sounds underfoot and grout that keeps opening are usually blamed on the tile or the grout. They are nearly always the layer below.
Tile has no give. Anything that moves under it, a deflecting floor, a fresh slab still curing, two materials expanding at different rates, has to go somewhere, and it goes through the weakest line in the tile bed.
That is why the quotes worth comparing are the ones that describe the substrate preparation. Two prices for the same square footage can differ by thousands and be for genuinely different jobs.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Movement joints
“Where will the movement joints go, and what spacing does the standard require here?”
A tiled area needs a compressible joint at every perimeter and at intervals across large floors, usually where the structure changes or the room exceeds a span the standard sets. Skipping them is invisible on handover day and shows up as tented tiles or a cracked line the first time the building expands.
Waterproofing in wet areas
“What waterproofing system goes behind the tile, and is it one manufacturer's from corner to corner?”
Tile and grout are not waterproof. In a shower the waterproof layer sits behind them, and it is a system: membrane, corners, pipe collars, all by one manufacturer. Mixing brands or skipping the corner pieces is where leaks into the room below begin, long after the tiler has gone.

Common questions about tile installation
Who handles tile installation?
Tile installation is handled by flooring companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking tile installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is tile installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
