The work
What carpet installation actually involves
The fibre decides the wear, the underlay decides the feel
Most residential carpet is nylon or polyester. Nylon springs back, which is why it holds up in hallways and on stairs; polyester resists stains naturally and feels softer, which is why it suits bedrooms and rooms that see less traffic.
Underneath, the underlay does more than comfort. It absorbs the impact that would otherwise crush the pile, and the carpet's own warranty usually specifies a minimum thickness and density for exactly that reason.
Density matters more than pile height. Bend a sample back on itself: the less backing you can see through the fibres, the denser it is, and dense carpet in a cheap style outlasts sparse carpet in an expensive one.
The warranty
The underlay is usually what voids the warranty
Carpet warranties are written around a complete installation, and the part homeowners are most often talked out of is the one the warranty names.
Most manufacturers specify a minimum underlay thickness and density. Reusing the old underlay, or accepting a thinner one to bring the quote down, can void the wear warranty on the carpet above it.
It is also the cheapest part of the job to get right. The difference between the specified underlay and a thin one is usually a small fraction of the total, and it decides how the carpet looks in five years.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Where the seams land
“Where will the seams fall, and can they run away from the window and out of the doorways?”
Carpet comes on a roll of fixed width, so any room wider than the roll has a seam. A seam placed across a doorway or down the middle of a bright room will be visible for the life of the carpet, and it is decided by how the installer plans the cut rather than by the quality of the carpet.
Stretching, not just laying
“Will the carpet be power stretched, and is the re-stretch covered if it ripples?”
Carpet on a tack strip has to be power stretched into place, not merely pushed in with a knee kicker. Under-stretched carpet develops ripples within a year or two, and re-stretching it later means moving the furniture and paying somebody to do the job properly the second time.

How we rank →Six checks, in the order they save you the most. None of them takes longer than a phone call, and the first one is the reason two quotes for the same job can be a thousand apart.
Common questions about carpet installation
Who handles carpet installation?
Carpet installation is handled by flooring companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking carpet installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is carpet installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
