The Ranking
Our top 9 flooring companies in Ottawa
Ottawa floors work hard. Winters are long and dry indoors, summers turn humid, and boots bring in road salt for five months. That swing moves wood. Solid hardwood needs time to acclimatize in the house before it goes down, and the installer should be checking moisture in the subfloor, not guessing. Basements are the usual trouble spot. Many older homes in the Glebe, Hintonburg, Alta Vista and Westboro sit on concrete slabs or aging plywood subfloors, and a slab that has not been tested for moisture is how vinyl lifts and engineered boards cup. Newer suburbs in Kanata, Barrhaven and Orléans bring different problems, mostly builder-grade subfloors that are not quite flat. Good installers level before they lay, and they tell you the cost up front.
Here is the licence check, stated plainly. Ontario has no provincial licence for flooring installers. Ottawa has a municipal business licence regime for some trades, and building permits go through the City of Ottawa when a job touches structure, plumbing or walls, which a bathroom renovation can. For new homes, Tarion covers the warranty and HCRA licenses builders and vendors. A flooring company may be none of those and still be perfectly good, so the useful questions are practical. Ask for liability insurance, ask whether the crew is covered by WSIB, ask who actually installs, and get the warranty in writing.
We started with Google Maps results for flooring in Ottawa, kept companies with 4.5 stars or better and at least 50 reviews, then checked each website, address and photos. Home-based and by-appointment operators, big-box stores and carpet cleaners were dropped. Several names that looked strong, including Alexanian and Rada Flooring, did not make it because they are rug and carpet retailers or had no real logo or photo set. We could confirm nine, not ten. Read the notes on each company for the honest downside, because every shop here has one.
