The work
What duct cleaning actually involves
What it does, and what it is often sold as doing
Duct cleaning is a physical job: a vacuum under negative pressure on the system while brushes or compressed air agitate the inside of the ducts, plus cleaning the coil, the blower and the return. Done properly it takes hours and the equipment is large.
It is genuinely worth doing in specific situations: after construction or renovation work, if there is visible mould in the ducts, if there has been vermin, or if the system was run without filters. As routine maintenance on a normal house, the evidence for a health benefit is thin.
Ask to see inside the ducts before and after, with a camera or a mirror. A firm that does this properly will be happy to show you; it is the most persuasive thing they have.
The offer
The whole-house special is an advertisement, not a price
This is the corner of home services with the most aggressive discounting, and a very low headline figure is almost always the opening of a different conversation.
The pattern is familiar: a small advertised price, a technician on site who finds mould, contamination or a need for sanitising treatment, and a total many times the number that got them through the door.
A straightforward firm will quote by the number of vents and returns, say plainly what is included, and put the price in writing before arriving.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Sanitising sprays and sealants
“What product is this, is it approved for use inside ducts, and what does it do that cleaning does not?”
Chemical treatments and duct sealants sprayed into the system are the most common upsell and the least well supported. Some are not approved for use inside ducts at all. Find out exactly what product is proposed and why, before agreeing to anything applied into the air you breathe.
Cleaning without touching the coil or blower
“Does this include the coil and the blower wheel, or only the ducts?”
Much of what accumulates in a forced air system is on the evaporator coil and the blower wheel rather than in the ducts. A cheap clean that runs a hose down the vents and leaves both untouched has skipped the part that actually affects airflow.

Common questions about duct cleaning
Who handles duct cleaning?
Duct cleaning is handled by HVAC companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking duct cleaning?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is duct cleaning priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
