The work
What ac installation actually involves
Sized by calculation, not by the unit that was there before
A replacement is the moment to get the size right, and the right way to size it is a load calculation that accounts for the building: floor area, insulation, window area and orientation, air leakage, local climate. The wrong way is to read the label on the old unit and match it.
Oversizing is the common error and it feels like the safe one. An oversized system cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat and shuts off before it has removed the humidity, so the house ends up cold and clammy, and the equipment wears out from constant starting.
A proper load calculation has a name and a method, and any contractor doing this seriously will be willing to show you theirs. If the sizing conversation begins and ends with the tonnage of the old unit, that is worth noticing.
Efficiency
The efficiency rating is a laboratory number
A high-efficiency unit installed on leaky ducts, with the wrong charge, in a house that was never sealed, will not deliver what the label says. The rating describes the equipment under test conditions, not your house.
The installation variables, duct sealing, correct refrigerant charge, adequate airflow across the coil, move real-world performance more than the difference between two adjacent efficiency tiers.
That is why the money often goes further in sealing ducts and improving the envelope than in buying up a tier, and why two quotes for the same rated unit are not the same offer.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
New outdoor unit, old indoor coil
“Is the indoor coil being replaced to match, and is the pair AHRI matched?”
Replacing only the condenser and keeping the existing indoor coil is cheaper and leaves you with a mismatched pair. The system will run, and it will not deliver its rated efficiency or capacity, and manufacturers frequently will not warrant it.
The ductwork nobody costed
“Have the ducts been assessed, and is any sealing or resizing in this price?”
The ducts are usually older than the equipment and frequently the reason the old system struggled. A quote that covers the box and says nothing about duct sizing, sealing or the return air path is a quote for half the system.

How we rank →Six checks, in the order they save you the most. None of them takes longer than a phone call, and the first one is the reason two quotes for the same job can be a thousand apart.

Common questions about ac installation
Who handles ac installation?
AC installation is handled by HVAC companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking ac installation?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is ac installation priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
