The work
What maintenance plans actually involves
What is in the plan, and what it is worth against paying per visit
A typical plan buys two visits a year, one before cooling season and one before heating, plus some combination of priority scheduling, a discount on repairs and a waived diagnostic fee. The visits themselves are a defined list of checks: charge, airflow, electrical connections, combustion, safety controls.
Whether it pays depends on the arithmetic. Add up the two visits at the normal rate, compare it to the plan, and treat the priority and the repair discount as what they are, which is insurance against a bad week rather than a saving.
Some manufacturer warranties require documented annual servicing. If yours does, the record the plan produces has a value beyond the visits, and it is worth checking whether that is the case before deciding.
Worth having
The real value is the inspection, not the cleaning
Most of what a maintenance visit produces is not the cleaning. It is somebody looking at a system once a year who knows what an early failure looks like.
A capacitor that is losing capacity, a contactor pitting, a refrigerant charge drifting, a flue partially blocked: all are visible before they strand you, and all are cheaper to deal with in April than in the first week of a heatwave.
That is also the test of a good plan. Ask what the technician checks and whether you get their readings afterwards. A visit that produces no numbers was a visit that changed the filter.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Rolling renewal and a rising price
“Does this auto-renew, at what price, and what happens to unused visits?”
Plans usually auto-renew, often at a rate that drifts up, and the visits are easy to forget to book. A plan you paid for and did not use is worse value than paying per visit. Check the renewal terms and put the visits in the calendar when you sign.
A discount on an inflated rate
“What is the standard hourly rate the discount applies to?”
Fifteen percent off repairs is only worth something if the underlying rates are competitive. Where the plan is the main thing being sold, the repair pricing behind it is worth sampling against a couple of independent quotes before you assume the discount is a saving.

Common questions about maintenance plans
Who handles maintenance plans?
Maintenance plans is handled by HVAC companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking maintenance plans?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is maintenance plans priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
