The work
What storm damage repair actually involves
Making it safe, documenting it, then repairing it
Storm work runs in three stages and they are easy to collapse into one. First is making the building safe and watertight, which usually means a temporary cover. Second is documenting what happened, because that is what the insurer pays against. Third is the permanent repair.
The middle stage is the one that gets skipped under pressure, and it is the one that decides how much of the repair you pay for yourself.
Photograph everything before anybody touches it, including the debris and the inside of any room that took water. A temporary cover fitted before the damage is recorded is a repair you may struggle to claim for.
After a storm
Be careful who knocks on the door
Severe weather brings crews into an area who were not there the week before and will not be there the month after. Some are legitimate firms following the work. Some are not.
The signals worth heeding are the ordinary ones: a local address you can visit, a licence number you can look up with the issuing authority, insurance confirmed by the insurer rather than by a certificate they hand you, and no pressure to sign today.
Be especially wary of an offer to cover your deductible or to handle the claim for you in exchange for signing the work over. Depending where you are, that is somewhere between a bad idea and insurance fraud.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Signing before the scope is known
“What exactly does this document commit me to if the claim is approved, and can I take it away to read?”
A contingency agreement signed on the doorstep can commit you to one contractor for whatever the insurer eventually approves, before anyone knows what that is or what it will cost. Read what you are signing, and take the time to, however urgent it feels.
A temporary cover treated as the repair
“How long is this temporary cover good for, and when is the permanent repair scheduled?”
A tarp or a temporary membrane is emergency mitigation with a life measured in weeks. Left over winter it becomes the roof, and the damage underneath goes on quietly. Agree at the outset when the permanent repair happens and what triggers it.

Common questions about storm damage repair
Who handles storm damage repair?
Storm damage repair is handled by roofing companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking storm damage repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is storm damage repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
