The work
What roof repair actually involves
Finding where the water gets in, which is rarely where it comes out
Water travels. A stain on a bedroom ceiling is often several feet from the actual entry point, because water runs along a rafter or a felt lap before it finds somewhere to drop. Chasing the stain rather than the source is how a roof gets repaired twice.
Most leaks are not holes in the field of the roof. They are at the interruptions: flashing around a chimney or a vent, a valley where two slopes meet, the edge detail, or a fastener that has backed out.
If the leak only shows in wind-driven rain rather than in a steady downpour, that points at flashing or a wall detail rather than at the covering, and it is worth telling the roofer which one you have seen.
Repair or replace
The age of the roof decides whether a repair is money well spent
A sound repair on a roof with years left is good value. The same repair on a roof near the end of its life is a deposit on a replacement you are going to make anyway.
Ask how old the covering is and how much life the roofer thinks is left, then weigh the repair against that. Patching a twenty-two year old asphalt roof twice costs more than replacing it once.
It also affects matching. On an older roof the replacement material will not weather to the same colour, so a repair in the middle of a visible slope stays visible.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
Sealant instead of flashing
“Is this being flashed properly or sealed, and how long should the fix last?”
A bead of roofing cement over a bad flashing detail will stop the leak and will fail, because sealant moves and ages differently to the metal and the covering around it. It is a legitimate temporary measure and a poor permanent one, and from the ground the two look identical.
Nobody looked in the attic
“Have you been inside the roof space, and what does the deck look like from underneath?”
The underside tells you things the surface cannot: where the water actually lands, whether the deck is soft, whether the insulation is wet, and whether this has been going on far longer than the stain suggests. A repair quoted from the ground or the ladder alone is a quote for the visible half of the problem.

Common questions about roof repair
Who handles roof repair?
Roof repair is handled by roofing companies. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking roof repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is roof repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
