Our top 10 hvac companies in Chicago

Chicago asks a lot of a heating and cooling system. Winter nights regularly fall below zero, summers bring humid heat waves, and much of the city lives in bungalows, two-flats and greystones built long before central air. Plenty of those homes still run on boilers and radiators, and adding air conditioning often means working around plaster walls with high-velocity or ductless systems. The good news is that Chicago has an unusually deep bench of established HVAC companies. Four firms on this list have been in business for 70 years or more, and six have more than 1,000 Google reviews. We checked every high-ranking Google result and kept only real local companies rated at least 4.5 from 50 or more reviews. The ten below range from a Southwest Side giant with over 31,000 reviews to a small Logan Square family shop that customers have trusted for decades. Before you hire anyone, a few checks help. Ask for a written quote with model numbers and a clear warranty on labor. For a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner, ask which utility or state rebates apply. For older homes, ask whether a high-velocity or ductless system would avoid tearing open walls. And if you live in a condo, clear the work with your association first.

How we chose the best hvac companies in Chicago

Read our full ranking methodology →

We searched Google Maps for HVAC companies in Chicago on September 16, 2026, then checked each high-ranking result's reviews and website. We removed listings with red flags such as virtual office addresses, template websites, broken sites, or businesses based outside the city. The companies that remained, all rated 4.5 or higher with at least 50 reviews, are listed in the order Google returned them. One well-reviewed firm with too little verifiable information was replaced by the next company in line. Ratings and review counts are as read on that date and will change. No company paid to be included.

How to choose a hvac company in Chicago

  • Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  • Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  • Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  • Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  • Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  • Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  • Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  • Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Are you insured, and can you send the certificate?
  • How long have you worked in this area?
  • Will you provide a written estimate with materials listed?
  • What warranty do you offer on the work itself?
  • Do you use subcontractors for this job?
  • Who handles permits and inspection?
  • What would you recommend here, and why?
  • How are unexpected costs handled once work starts?
  • What is the estimated timeline from start to finish?
  • Can you provide recent local references?

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

HVAC companies in Chicago FAQs

  • Can an older Chicago home without ducts get central air?

Usually yes. Small-duct high-velocity systems such as Unico and SpacePak, and ductless mini-splits, can bring air conditioning to bungalows and greystones without large ductwork. All Temp and Five Star HVAC both specialise in this kind of install.

  • Is an HVAC maintenance plan worth it in Chicago?

Many Chicago companies offer maintenance plans, usually with twice-yearly tune-ups and priority scheduling. Deljo reports more than 3,800 active agreements, and All Temp runs its Comfort Club. A plan is worth it if you want your system checked before each season.

  • Who repairs boilers and radiators in Chicago?

Look for companies that list boiler and radiator work. Global Heating and Cooling, Deljo and Five Star HVAC all service boilers, which are common in Chicago's two-flats and vintage buildings.
