10 Best HVAC Companies in Charlotte, NC

Morris-Jenkins, Horne Heating and Air Conditioning and Bradham Comfort Services top this list of Charlotte's ten best-reviewed HVAC companies, each vetted for a current North Carolina rating of 4.5 stars or higher across at least 50 Google reviews, a real local address, and a working website.

Our top 10 hvac companies in Charlotte

Charlotte's long, humid summers and short, mild winters put real strain on residential HVAC systems, and the mix of older brick bungalows in NoDa and Plaza Midwood alongside newer construction out toward Ballantyne and Steele Creek means duct layouts and system sizing vary a lot block to block. Before hiring anyone for HVAC work in North Carolina, confirm they hold a current license with the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, since the license covers the specific trade and jobs above a certain dollar threshold legally require one. For jobs crossing into South Carolina suburbs like Fort Mill or Rock Hill, a separate South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board credential applies.

How we chose the best hvac companies in Charlotte

Read our full ranking methodology →

We ran two Google Maps searches, "HVAC contractor in Charlotte, NC" and "HVAC company Charlotte," merged the results in Google's own ranking order, and removed duplicates and companies located in neighboring suburbs like Mint Hill and Indian Trail rather than Charlotte proper. Every company kept here has a Google rating of 4.5 stars or higher across at least 50 reviews, an operational status, and a real website. We read each company's site for licensing, founding year, brands, financing and warranty details, cross-checked names and addresses against Google, and wrote every profile from those sources rather than accepting marketing copy at face value. Ratings and review counts were read on September 21, 2026. No company paid for placement or for a better position in this list.

How to choose a hvac company in Charlotte

  • Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  • Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  • Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  • Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  • Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  • Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  • Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  • Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Are you insured, and can you send the certificate?
  • How long have you worked in this area?
  • Will you provide a written estimate with materials listed?
  • What warranty do you offer on the work itself?
  • Do you use subcontractors for this job?
  • Who handles permits and inspection?
  • What would you recommend here, and why?
  • How are unexpected costs handled once work starts?
  • What is the estimated timeline from start to finish?
  • Can you provide recent local references?

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

HVAC companies in Charlotte FAQs

  • How do I check if an HVAC contractor is licensed in Charlotte?

Look up the contractor's license number with the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, which licenses HVAC work statewide. For a job that crosses into a South Carolina suburb like Fort Mill or Rock Hill, check the separate South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board as well. A current license is required for HVAC jobs above a set dollar threshold in both states, and a contractor unwilling to share their license number is a red flag.

  • How much does HVAC maintenance cost in Charlotte?

Most companies in this ranking sell maintenance through a membership plan rather than a one-off visit, bundling one or two seasonal tune-ups with priority scheduling and discounted repairs; Horne's plan runs under seventeen dollars a month as one example. Exact pricing varies by company and system size, so ask for the membership terms in writing and compare what each visit actually covers, such as filter changes and refrigerant checks, before signing up.

  • Why does Charlotte need such a wide range of HVAC contractors?

Charlotte's older neighborhoods, like Plaza Midwood and NoDa, often run undersized or outdated ductwork that newer suburbs like Steele Creek and Ballantyne don't have to deal with, and the region's long, humid cooling season puts more hours on a system each year than a milder climate would. That mix is why load calculations, mentioned by several companies in this ranking, matter more here than a quick like-for-like replacement.
