The Ranking

Our top 6 general contractors in Calgary

Calgary's housing stock keeps general contractors busy on two fronts. Established communities such as Mayland Heights, Bowness and Altadore have older houses that need structural work, second-storey additions and full interior rebuilds, while newer suburbs such as Mahogany and Auburn Bay call for basement development and secondary suites. Hail and chinook swings add exterior work on top. The jobs that suit a general contractor are the ones with several trades and a permit file, where one company is responsible for sequencing the work and answering for the result. Alberta has no provincial licence for a general contractor on renovation work, so the checks add up. A contractor needs a City of Calgary business licence, which you can look up with the City's Licensed Trade Contractor tool, and without it cannot pull construction or trade permits. Gas, electrical and plumbing work must be done under the right trade qualification. Builders of new homes also need the provincial builder licence required by the New Home Buyer Protection Act, and that is not required for a renovation. A contractor that takes a deposit or progress payments before the work is done needs a Government of Alberta prepaid contractor licence. Ask for WCB clearance and an insurance certificate, and settle in the written contract who applies for each permit. Because there is no provincial licence on a renovation, your protection is the contract and the contractor's own warranty.

Methodology

How we chose the best general contractors in Calgary

We read Google Maps results for "general contractor in Calgary, AB", "general contractor company Calgary" and "design build contractor Calgary" on October 31, 2026, and added three searches for additions, custom builders and southwest Calgary. Each company had to be operating, rated 4.5 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews, and show a Calgary street address, a working website, a logo and real project photos. We rejected home addresses, PO boxes and unconfirmed shared office suites, roofing and exterior-only firms, design studios, garage specialists, basement-only developers, commercial-only builders and firms with too few reviews. Only six companies passed, and five of them also appear in our Calgary home remodeling list because they take on whole-home work with permits. The order follows Google's results. Where a website did not state a licence or insurance number we say so. No company paid for a place. Ratings and review counts were read on October 31, 2026.

Hiring

How to choose a general contractor in Calgary

  1. Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  2. Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  3. Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  4. Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  5. Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  6. Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  7. Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  8. Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

0 of 10 asked

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

FAQ

General contracting companies in Calgary FAQs

How do I check a Calgary general contractor's licence?

Alberta has no provincial licence for a general contractor on renovation work, so start with the City of Calgary's Licensed Trade Contractor tool, since the City says a contractor needs a valid business licence to get construction and trade permits. Ask for WCB clearance and an insurance certificate. If the contractor wants a deposit or progress payments before work is done, ask for a Government of Alberta prepaid contractor licence too.

How much does a general contractor charge in Calgary?

It depends on scope, finishes and the age of the house, and none of the six companies here publishes a full price list. Ask for a written itemized quote that separates labour, materials, permits and allowances, and compare at least two quotes for the same scope. Kay2 Contracting says it gives a guaranteed price before you sign the construction contract.

Do I need a general contractor to build a home addition in Calgary?

Usually yes for anything structural. An addition needs a City of Calgary building permit plus trade permits for electrical, plumbing and gas, and a general contractor coordinates the trades and the inspections. Ask in writing who applies for each permit, then check the permit status with the City before the work is closed up.
