5 Best Locksmiths in Hamilton, ON (2026)

TenBestFind ranks 5 locksmiths in Hamilton, ON. Each company had to be operating, rated 4.5 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews, and show a working website and a phone number matching Google. The list was last reviewed on October 29, 2026.

Dundas Lock & Key, About Town Lock & Key and Ottawa Key Shop lead our Hamilton locksmith list, three staffed shops with Google ratings of 4.5 or higher. Dundas is an authorized Medeco dealer with 35 years behind the counter, About Town has sold hardware on Cannon Street since 1994, and Ottawa Key Shop is a family-run Ottawa Street shop with roots back to 1939. Alpha Locksmith and Mike's Locksmith Service complete the five as mobile services, listed after the shops because neither has a public storefront.

The Ranking

Our top 5 locksmiths in Hamilton

Hamilton's mix of steel-town brick rowhouses in Crown Point and Gibson, escarpment-side homes on the Mountain and older stone houses in Dundas and Ancaster means locksmiths here see everything from worn knob sets to modern keypad deadbolts. Winter brings frozen cylinders and spring brings the rekeying that follows a house sale. Ontario does not issue a provincial locksmith licence, so the check that matters is the business itself. Ask for a street address you can visit, proof of insurance, a marked vehicle and photo ID when the technician arrives, and confirm the price before any work starts. Mobile locksmiths are common in Hamilton and the two on this list are established ones, but they have no shop to visit, so the extra step of confirming identity and a written quote matters more with them.

Methodology

How we chose the best locksmiths in Hamilton

We checked Google Maps data and business listings for Hamilton locksmiths on October 29, 2026. Each company had to be operating, rated 4.5 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews, and show a working website and a phone number matching Google. Companies with a staffed street address are listed first, then two established mobile services with no public shop, which we included because too few shops passed and we say so on their profiles. We rejected auto-only companies, home addresses, doorway sites and kiosks. No company paid for a place. Ratings and review counts were read on October 29, 2026.

Hiring

How to choose a locksmith in Hamilton

  1. Get a firm price on the phone

Ask for the full cost of the job, call-out included, before anyone drives over. A real shop can quote a lockout or a rekey in one call.

  2. Ask for the business name

Write down the registered name and the address. Many listings are call centres that pass the job to whoever is closest.

  3. Check ID when they arrive

The technician should match the company you called, with a marked vehicle or ID. A reputable locksmith will also ask for proof that you live there.

  4. Ask about the method

Most lockouts can be opened without drilling. If the first move is to drill and replace the lock, ask why before you agree.

  5. Get a written invoice

The invoice should name the company, the parts used and the labour. Keep it in case the new lock fails.

  6. Ask about the warranty

New hardware usually carries a manufacturer warranty, and the work should carry the locksmith's own. Get both lengths in writing.

Questions to ask before hiring

0 of 8 asked

Red flags

  • A very low quote on the phone that grows once the door is open
  • No business name, only a generic 'locksmith service' answer
  • Drilling the lock as the first and only option
  • An unmarked car and no ID
  • Cash only, with no invoice

FAQ

Locksmith companies in Hamilton FAQs

Does Hamilton require locksmiths to be licensed?

Ontario does not issue a provincial locksmith licence, so the check is on the business. Ask for a street address you can visit, proof of insurance, a marked vehicle and photo ID when the technician arrives. Membership in the Association of Ontario Locksmiths or ALOA is a useful sign but not a licence.

How much does a locksmith cost in Hamilton?

Prices depend on the job and the hour, so ask for the total before work starts. Most companies charge a service call fee plus labour and parts, and evenings cost more. Rekeying usually costs less than replacing hardware, and a written quote protects you from surprise charges.

Is there a Hamilton locksmith open in the evening?

Alpha Locksmith lists hours until 9 PM daily, while the three shops on this list keep daytime weekday hours. Mike's Locksmith Service works weekdays only. If you are locked out at night, phone first and confirm who will come, the arrival time and the after-hours rate.
