The Ranking

Our top 5 locksmiths in Toronto

Toronto is a city of condos, semis and older rowhouses, and that mix shapes what a locksmith gets called for. Condo owners need fobs cloned and deadbolts rekeyed after a move. Homeowners in the east end and downtown call for lockouts and worn cylinders. Small shops on the main streets need master key systems and door hardware. The trade is also crowded with call-centre operators that list a mailbox or an office suite as an address, so we only kept companies with a street address in the city that we could match to a website, a phone number and a track record of Google reviews. Ontario does not license locksmiths at the provincial level, which means the check falls to you. Before anyone touches your lock, ask for the business name and registration, proof of insurance, a firm price on the phone, and identification when the technician arrives. A real company will give you all four without fuss. Several companies on this list lean toward automotive keys or key cutting, and each entry says so plainly, so you can pick the one that fits your door rather than your car.

Methodology

How we chose the best locksmiths in Toronto

We searched Google Maps for locksmiths in Toronto on October 28, 2026, kept companies that were open, rated 4.5 or higher with at least 50 reviews, and checked each website and address. We rejected mailbox and virtual office addresses, doorway sites with one template per city, and companies whose phone or address did not match Google. Companies are listed in the order Google showed them. No company paid for a place on this list. Fewer than ten companies passed, so the list has five.

Hiring

How to choose a locksmith in Toronto

  1. Get a firm price on the phone

Ask for the full cost of the job, call-out included, before anyone drives over. A real shop can quote a lockout or a rekey in one call.

  2. Ask for the business name

Write down the registered name and the address. Many listings are call centres that pass the job to whoever is closest.

  3. Check ID when they arrive

The technician should match the company you called, with a marked vehicle or ID. A reputable locksmith will also ask for proof that you live there.

  4. Ask about the method

Most lockouts can be opened without drilling. If the first move is to drill and replace the lock, ask why before you agree.

  5. Get a written invoice

The invoice should name the company, the parts used and the labour. Keep it in case the new lock fails.

  6. Ask about the warranty

New hardware usually carries a manufacturer warranty, and the work should carry the locksmith's own. Get both lengths in writing.

Questions to ask before hiring

0 of 8 asked

Red flags

  • A very low quote on the phone that grows once the door is open
  • No business name, only a generic 'locksmith service' answer
  • Drilling the lock as the first and only option
  • An unmarked car and no ID
  • Cash only, with no invoice

FAQ

Locksmith companies in Toronto FAQs

Do locksmiths need a licence in Toronto?

Ontario does not issue a provincial locksmith licence, so the check is yours to make. Ask for the registered business name, proof of insurance, a firm price on the phone and photo identification when the technician arrives. A genuine company will provide all of it.

How much does a locksmith cost in Toronto?

Prices vary by job, hour and lock type, so get a quote before work starts. Companies on this list post or quote prices for common work such as copied keys and condo fobs. Be wary of anyone who gives only a low starting figure and will not explain the final cost.

Who can copy a condo key fob in Toronto?

Several locksmiths on this list clone building fobs at the counter, including Acme Lock & Key in Scarborough and Monty's Locksmith in North York. Bring the original fob and check with your building management first, since some buildings restrict copies.
