The work
What sewer line repair actually involves
Lining it or digging it, and what the camera has to show first
A damaged sewer line can often be repaired without a trench. A cured-in-place liner is a resin sleeve pulled through the existing pipe and hardened, leaving a new pipe inside the old one. Pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through while fracturing the old one outward. Both need access pits rather than a full excavation.
Neither works everywhere. A line that has collapsed, lost its fall or separated at a joint has nothing left to line, and then it is a dig.
Lining reduces the internal diameter slightly. On a line that is already at the minimum for its length and fall, that can matter, and it is a question worth putting to the contractor rather than assuming.
Where your responsibility ends
The lateral is usually yours all the way to the main
People assume the property line is the boundary of their responsibility. In most jurisdictions it is not: the lateral from the house to the public sewer belongs to the property owner along its whole length, including the part under the road.
That is what turns a sewer repair from a few thousand into a much larger number, because the section under the pavement needs permits, traffic control and reinstatement.
It is worth confirming locally before you agree to anything, and worth knowing that some municipalities do take over at the property line. The answer changes the scope of every quote you are comparing.
Failure points
Two things that go wrong
No survey and no locate before the price
“Can I see the camera footage and the marked route and depth before I accept the quote?”
A sewer quote given without a camera down the line and a locator marking the depth and route is a guess. It is also how a job that was priced as twenty feet of lining becomes an excavation halfway through, with the variation priced while the machine is already on site.
Repairing the damage and leaving the cause
“What caused this, and does the repair deal with the cause or just the damage?”
Roots enter at a joint because the joint is open, and they will re-enter a repaired line if the joint is still there. The same is true of a belly that holds water. Fixing the visible break without addressing what caused it puts you back here in a few years.

Common questions about sewer line repair
Who handles sewer line repair?
Sewer line repair is handled by plumbers. Not every company in the trade takes this work on, so each ranking lists the services a company genuinely performs rather than everything it advertises.
What should I ask before booking sewer line repair?
Ask what the quote includes and excludes, who is doing the work, whether a permit is needed and who is pulling it, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Get the answers in writing before anyone starts.
How do I compare quotes for this?
Put them on one sheet line by line. Differences in price almost always turn out to be differences in scope, material grade or warranty length rather than margin.
Is sewer line repair priced separately from the rest of the job?
Usually it is a line inside a larger quote rather than its own invoice, which is exactly why the exclusions matter. Ask for it itemised so you can compare that line between companies instead of comparing two totals.
