The Ranking

Our top 5 flooring companies in Toronto

Toronto floors have to cope with a wide mix of buildings. Century-old semis in Riverdale, the Annex and East York often have uneven plank subfloors under later layers of carpet or vinyl, 1950s bungalows in North York and Etobicoke usually have hardwood hiding under broadloom, and downtown condos add sound rules that set what underlayment you can use. Basements are the other big job, because slab moisture is the usual reason a laminate or engineered floor cups or a vinyl plank lifts. Ontario's swing from humid summers to dry heated winters also moves solid hardwood, which is why many installers recommend engineered planks or a conditioning period before nailing. A good installer checks the subfloor and moisture before quoting, and the best ones say so up front.\n\nOntario does not issue a provincial licence to flooring installers, and the City of Toronto does not run a separate flooring trade licence, so the checks are yours to run. Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and a WSIB clearance certificate, a written quote that separates material, labour, removal and underlayment, and the warranty terms in writing. If you live in a condo, ask your management office what sound rating and notice period apply before ordering. We list what each company says about itself and flag what we could not confirm, including firms that work from office suites or offer limited detail on installation.

Methodology

How we chose the best flooring companies in Toronto

We searched Google business listings for flooring contractors, flooring stores, hardwood installers and refinishers in and around Toronto on November 1, 2026. Google Maps text search was rate limited that day, so we used DataForSEO business listings data instead and could not list companies in Google's own result order. We ordered the five by Google rating, then by review count. Each had to be operating, rated 4.5 or higher from at least 50 Google reviews, have a working own website, a real logo and photos, and an address inside Toronto or its former boroughs such as North York and Scarborough. We excluded big-box and general retail stores, companies with keyword-stuffed names, lead-generation sites, apartment or home addresses, companies with no working website or logo, specialty epoxy and concrete firms, and the second listing of any chain. Licences, warranties and installation claims are the companies' own statements unless noted. No company paid for a place. Ratings and review counts were read on November 1, 2026.

Hiring

How to choose a flooring company in Toronto

  1. Verify insurance and credentials

Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm registration or licensing with the authority that issues it, not with the company.

  2. Ask for a written estimate

Scope, materials, removal, disposal and who pulls the permit should all be named on the page rather than agreed on the doorstep.

  3. Compare multiple quotes

Two or three bids on the same scope. A number far below the others usually means something has been left out of it.

  4. Understand the warranty

Separate the manufacturer's warranty on materials from the company's own warranty on the work, and get both in writing.

  5. Ask who performs the work

Find out whether the crew are employees or subcontractors, and who supervises them on the day.

  6. Check recent local projects

Ask for addresses or photographs of comparable jobs finished nearby in the last year or two.

  7. Avoid high-pressure sales

A discount that expires today, or a knock on the door after a storm, is a reason to slow down rather than sign.

  8. Get everything in writing

Change orders, timeline and payment schedule included, before the first payment changes hands.

Questions to ask before hiring

0 of 10 asked

Red flags

  • No verifiable local business address or registration
  • Pressure to sign on the first visit
  • A demand for full payment up front
  • An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
  • Refusal to put warranty terms in writing
  • A quote that will not itemize scope

FAQ

Flooring companies in Toronto FAQs

Does Toronto or Ontario require a licence for flooring installers?

No. Ontario does not issue a provincial licence to flooring installers, so the checks are yours to run. Ask for a certificate of liability insurance, a WSIB clearance certificate and a written quote that lists material, labour and removal separately. None of the five companies here publishes a licence number, and we say so on each profile.

How much does flooring installation cost in Toronto?

It depends on the material, the subfloor and whether old flooring must come out, so ask for a written quote after a site visit. Top Floorings Depot posts starting installed rates on its site, for example from $1.50 per square foot for laminate and vinyl plank and from $2.00 for hardwood, before subfloor repairs. Treat any posted rate as a floor, not a final price.

Which Toronto flooring companies also do staircases?

Zelta Floor & Design lists stair installation, recapping, refinishing and glass railings as core services, and Top Floorings Depot installs treads, risers and nosing. Danforth Carpet Connection sells stair runners. Ask any installer whether stair work is done by their own crew and whether it is priced separately from the floor.
