Editorial Review

Our Take on Joe's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd.

Three and a half decades under the same founder, a 24-hour guarantee, and a published direct email are the kind of unglamorous details that add up to real trust, even without a BBB rating to point to.

Best for: Same-day emergency plumbing and heat pump installation

  • Tym Deal5.0Joe and his friendly and knowledgeable team very promptly responded to an emergency leak in my main water intake pipe. They solved a difficult problem in a challenging environment. I unreservedly recommend them. I definitely called the right plumber.September 2026Google
  • Matthew1.0I booked Joe’s to install a gas stove, a dishwasher, and a fridge water line in my new-build home. Since all the rough-in connections were already in place, it was a straightforward hookup job. The person I spoke with on the phone was helpful and assured me the tech would have the necessary gas connector and dishwasher water line in his truck. As requested, I texted over the model numbers and pictures of the setup, then booked for August 13th. Knowing the Bosch dishwasher required a special power cord with a junction box, I bought one ahead of time so everything was ready to go. Here is how the installation day actually went: 8:40 AM: Plumber arrives and starts reviewing the work. 9:40 AM: He realizes he doesn't have the dishwasher water line or gas connectors on his truck after all, leaving to drive to Dartmouth to get them. 10:15 AM: He calls asking for more pictures of the gas stove and lines. 11:20 AM: He gets back with parts and starts on the dishwasher. 12:00 PM: He tells me the dishwasher can’t sit flush with the cabinets and will stick out about an inch and a half. I had to look it up myself and show him how to adjust and pull the piping through so it would fit properly. 12:15 PM: Hooks up the fridge line (takes 5 minutes). 12:20 PM: He tells me the bottom metal piece won't fit and that I should just leave the rubber exposed. Again, I had to look up the instructions for the toe kick bracket setup and walk him through how it actually attaches. 12:45 PM: Finishes physical setup, starts a test cycle on the dishwasher, and moves to the gas stove. 1:08 PM: We notice the dishwasher has stopped and won't drain. 1:43 PM: Still struggling to get it to drain. 2:00 PM: Finishes gas leak testing the stove. 2:45 PM: He gives up, declares the brand-new dishwasher defective, and tells me to call a Bosch warranty technician. 2:53 PM: Charges me for 6 hours of labor, which I paid despite being extremely frustrated. I contacted the retailer, who scheduled a Bosch service technician for August 24th. When the tech arrived and I explained what happened, he immediately suspected the installer forgot to knock out the plastic drain plug inside the disposal/inlet port. Sure enough, when he pulled the hose, the plastic plug was stuck right inside it. The tech pointed out that any experienced plumber knows to remove that knockout plug on a new build. He mentioned a standard dishwasher install should take 15 to 45 minutes, that the parts should have been on the truck, and that driving to pick up basic supplies shouldn't be billed to the customer. While fixing the drain issue, he also leveled the unit properly and fixed the hose routing, pulling it up into a proper high loop. Out of courtesy, he coded the warranty visit so I wouldn't be billed for the installer's mistake. Given the complete lack of skill shown on the dishwasher, I'm left genuinely concerned about whether my gas stove was installed safely or if I need to pay a qualified professional to inspect it. When I called Joe’s on August 24th to voice these concerns, the person on the phone said he would inform the owner. Later that day, he texted offering a single one-hour rebate. I declined, explaining that I wanted to speak with the owner directly about the full experience. I was promised a callback within a few days, but after following up every few days and being told the owner would call me back, I finally gave up on September 11th. Charging nearly $1,400 for 6 hours of incompetence to do standard hookups in a pre-plumbed new build is unacceptable. Paying $175 an hour for an installer who didn't know basic installation procedures and does not have basic supplies is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.September 2026Google
  • Shelley Banks1.0I have had a horrible experience with this company from giving me a quote for a job than taking 4 hours longer without an explanation. I believe they sent an apprentice plumber who didn't know what they were doing. I asked for the plumbers credentials and they never provided them. They installed a shower base over loose gravel. They came to do a job of moving a shower drain to tell me they didn't have a jackhammer and would have to go buy one.My lesson learned always ask for credentials before you let someone do work in your home and never pay them if you are unhappy with their service because they will ignore you after they have their money.September 2026Google

About Joe's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Ltd.

Joe's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning has operated in the Halifax area since 1990, putting more than 35 years behind founder Joe's name, and the company's Google page averages 4.8 stars across 332 reviews, read September 24, 2026, with reviewers naming technicians Ben and Rabiu specifically for their work.

The service list combines plumbing and HVAC under one roof: emergency plumbing calls, sump pump installation and service, bathroom and kitchen plumbing, drain line cleaning, boiler repair and installation, heat pump installation, water heater installation and maintenance, and both ducted and ductless air conditioning installation and repair, with Kerr heat pump systems shown among the equipment installed. The company is open 24 hours and states a guaranteed same-day or next-day response for service calls, with Joe himself listed as the point of contact for emergency dispatch.

A direct company email, office@joesphac.com, sits on the site alongside the phone number, a detail plenty of small trade shops skip in favor of a contact form only. Joe's is a member of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. The site doesn't publish specific Nova Scotia certification numbers, a Better Business Bureau rating, or written warranty terms, and financing options aren't mentioned.

Service reaches across the Halifax Regional Municipality, including Dartmouth, Bedford, and Sackville, not just the Halifax peninsula itself.

Joe's suits a homeowner who wants a long-tenured, family-run company willing to publish a direct email and guarantee a same-day or next-day response around the clock. It suits less well someone who wants a published Better Business Bureau rating or detailed warranty terms confirmed online before calling. Ask for the plumber's or gasfitter's Nova Scotia certification and current warranty terms on a new installation before booking.
